Common Birds 31 - Canada Geese II
Wednesday, May 24
Look, a new goose pair is on the pond, swimming away from the near shore. Their lone, yellow gosling swims between them, head bobbing with every kick of its feet. And I know that geese don’t ever lay just one egg. I see these geese are well acquainted with grief.
Grief, too, is a liturgy, an ancient, well-worn way which is always, always new to those who walk it.
Yet, the single gosling lives, eagerly paddling one webbed foot after the other. The wind stirs in my chest, filling me with joy and love for all that hold this passing breath, and I pray the stream may be their home and love them well.
