Common Birds 48 - Nuthatch 4

Common Birds 48 - Nuthatch 4

Wednesday, October 11

Once again, I have the luxury of waiting. On the days when our son is in daycare, I don’t have to keep a mental timer running to plan for the next time he eats. He loves motion, so on walks we’re always moving, and at home, I’m often bouncing him to sleep. Alone, I can set the pace, slow, even stop.

Likewise, the nuthatches have sent their children off into the world. They’re back to working through the trees. The parents once again travel together, keeping up a near constant chatter (ack, ack!), checking in on each other. This makes it a great time to see nuthatches and they are my very favorite sort of birdwatching. Because nuthatches move fairly steadily from branch to branch and trunk to trunk, when you hear them, often all you have to do is wait and they’ll come to like, like prayer. Be still. Watch, listen, wait, and, after a time, receive the grace of their presence.
