Common Birds 68 - Nuthatch

Common Birds 68 - Nuthatch

Monday, March 18

After another hectic week of broken schedules and sickness, it is good to begin this week watching a nuthatch sing. Coming up the trail, I stopped when I heard his voice across the pond, then spotted him as he darted through the intervening air and light. He landed above my head and instead of diving into his search for food, he paused and broke into his laughing song - Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah - the sound of a happy nuthatch.

Why does the nuthatch sing?

Is he claiming territory? Is he trying to find a mate? He is alone which is unusual for nuthatches, though nesting season is coming. I like to think he sings for the same reason I stop to watch, listen, and enjoy. The sunlight is warm, the air is cool, the water and sky are matching blues. The world is beautiful, and it is a good, right, and joyful thing to stop, rest, and give thanks.
