Common Birds 76 - Nuthatch
Wednesday, May 1
A nuthatch gives a little call when I step out of the parking lot and into the woods. I see him, alone, scanning the branches for food. It’s a good day. Any day I see a nuthatch is a good day, a rule I started when I lived in Potsdam and saw them almost everyday.
When I first started birding, I briefly considered changing my favorite bird from nuthatches to something rarer or more vibrant. Then I said to my soul, Soul, you have a good thing going if you can see your favorite bird everyday, and that’s enough to declare the day good. And anyway, I don’t think I could change even if I wanted to. Nuthatches are too great.
Also, there are robins just everywhere right now, I almost forgot to say.
